Position Summary
The Communications Director will be responsible for working closely with reporters and storytellers, pitching stories, and helping to shape the strategy of our campaign vertical. The Communications Director will manage two staffers and report to the Senior Campaign Director. The Communications Director will work closely with on-the-ground partners, storytellers, and allied partners to amplify their work and help craft issue advocacy education campaigns.
Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
- Develop the communications plan, and work collaboratively with the Campaign Director to align strategies and tactics to reach the campaign's goals.
- Serve as a senior staff member on the abortion team, to help with internal organization, staff management, program development, consultant management, and organization-wide needs.
- Manage staff who will oversee press and research components of the education campaign.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues managing the campaigns, research, and partnership efforts.
- Lead earned media outreach and lead media pitching efforts with the press and build relationships with reporters and television bookers.
- Inform, write, and drive content development such as message guides, talking points, LTEs, toolkits, and more.
- Prep and staff storytellers, and spokespeople for press opportunities. Speak on the record with reporters as F&J spokesperson when necessary.
- Build and manage relationships with partners to align on messaging and external communications. Serve as campaign representative at stakeholder meetings.
- Responsible for tracking and managing an approved budget.
About you
- You have extensive experience managing an earned media campaign and garnering significant press coverage.
- You have a robust network of media relationships and extensive experience pitching political press.
- You have at least 7 years of relevant experience in campaigns, issue advocacy, and political or other relevant settings.
- You are well organized with the ability to prioritize across multiple projects and deliver results under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- You are strong at people management and can work collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team.
- You have excellent writing and editing skills.
- You are a self-starter and independent worker.
- You have flexibility and openness to evolving responsibilities.
- You are passionate about progressive causes and policies.
- You are talented at working with partner organizations and forming meaningful organizational collaboration.
Benefits
Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
